Vodacom Business Opens world-class Tier 4 Data Centre in Durban

Friday, 3 September 2010

Vodacom Business today opened its new data centre at the Vodacom Mount Edgecombe switching node. A brand new centre, it offers the full spectrum of Vodacom Business services to local KwaZulu Natal customers who wish to take advantage of business critical cloud computing solutions. The Vodacom Business Data Centre caters for large corporates and public sector entities with vast IT infrastructure needs, to small businesses, including Small Medium Micro Enterprises (SMME) and Small Office Home Office (SoHo) businesses which need cost effective hosting services.

"Our expectations are that we will experience exponential growth in our local customer base as the benefits of solutions in the cloud are understood at the user level and we have planned for this growth," says Steven Hayward, Executive Director Vodacom Business.

Customers will have a number of cloud computing options in the Vodacom Business Data Centre including Virtual Resource pooling in the VM environment, Software as a Service, and backups, as well as basic web hosting, sever co - location, dedicated hosting, and managed storage.

Vodacom Business uses a uniform design and standards in all data centres built and being built throughout the country. Based on the N+N principle with dual feeds from Eskom, the design is built for robustness and maximum uptime supported by Service Level Agreements. The Durban data centre has dual 800KVA Gensets and dual 9000 litre diesel tanks ensuring power is delivered to the environment through most eventualities. The data center was designed to host mission critical computer systems, with fully redundant subsystems and compartmentalized security zones controlled by biometric access control methods, video surveillance, on-site security officers and redundant power. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), as well as fire-suppression systems, ensure the highest levels of security and reliability.

"All environmental considerations were taken and the data centre has been designed around a green environment from lighting to electrical performance," says Steven. "This allows customers to reduce their own carbon footprint and use a safe and redundant platform to deploy their mission critical information and server infrastructure."

The data centre will be based in 1400 square metre location that houses the Vodacom switching node and has space available for our clients.
