15 Vodacom Group Limited GREAT THINGS WE DID IN 2019 Improving the lives of our communities Partnerships to transform lives Partnering with Global Citizen on education and gender empowerment Since the Global Citizen Mandela 100 Concert in December 2018, the partnership between Global Citizen and Vodacom has strengthened. In 2018, at the Global Citizen festival, Vodacom made a pledge to spend R500 million over five years on education programmes, including digital literacy and gender empowerment. To date, Vodacom has spent R95 million of the pledged amount on digital literacy, gender empowerment and the decommissioning of pit latrines at schools and ECD centres. This partnership has enabled Vodacom to participate in various Global Citizen platforms including the Mandela 100 Anniversary and the Global Citizen Business Leadership Awards in London where Ms. Taki Netshitenzhe, Chief Officer: Corporate Affairs represented Vodacom as one of the judges for the awards. SMILE Week 2019 Smile Foundation is a South African NGO that assists children with any type of facial or other conditions, to receive reconstructive surgery within South Africa. The Vodacom Foundation has supported the SMILE Foundation for 19 years and has changed the lives of more than 3 500 children. In 2019, SMILE Week took place in Tygerberg Hospital and a medical team performed medical operations on 18 children.
