10 Vodacom Group Limited GREAT THINGS WE DID IN 2019 Our commitment to women empowerment Preventing GBV and empowering women Gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa has become a major challenge. In response to this challenge, Vodacom and the Department of Social Development partnered to launch the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC) in 2014. Vodacom contributed R4 million to this partnership to create a call centre that is managed by trained government- employed social workers. The call centre receives an alarming average of 22 000 calls per month. To empower the victims; Vodacom provides digital literacy to victims of GBV. Since inception, Vodacom has spent R2.5 million to deploy computers and train more than 1 300 survivors of violence in shelters across the country. In 2019, Vodafone CEO, Mr. Nick Read visited the command centre to support this programme. Case Study Ministerial visit to the GBV Command Centre In 2019, the Minister of the Department of Social Development, Ms. Lindiwe Zulu invited some of the Ministry’s key stakeholders for a tour of the GBV Command Centre. The Minister was joined by the Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities in the Presidency, Ms. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and Prof. Olive Sishana, Special Advisor to the Presidency. The purpose of the visit was to highlight the services provided by the Command Centre and how technology has enhanced the operation of the centre. Inclusion for All  continued
