Vodacom boosts tech students with bursaries

Wednesday, 23 January 2013

Vodacom has boosted technology students with bursaries totalling R9.2 million to pursue undergraduate degrees at tertiary institutions for 2013.

These bursaries cover studies in information technology, computer science, electrical engineering and computer engineering. All students receive full tuition fees and an allowance for books, accommodation and meals.

The Vodacom Bursary Scheme, which has awarded over 1 200 study bursaries to date supports up to 111 bursaries annually and has awarded 25 new bursaries for 2013.

Vodacom's chief officer: corporate affairs, Maya Makanjee said: "South Africa's future depends on ensuring greater access to education, and in particular, ensuring that a lack of funding does not stop top students from furthering their education."

The Vodacom Bursary Scheme focuses in particular on helping nurture skills needed in the ICT industry, with the potential for beneficiaries to join Vodacom depending on their performance and job openings.

Nandipha Makohliso (23) a BSc computer science student at Fort Hare University is one student who is benefiting from this programme. Makohliso said that after matriculating in 2005 she couldn't further her studies because she couldn't afford to.

"I was wise enough to apply for the Vodacom Bursary Scheme that has helped me with paying for my education. Now I don't have to worry about fees. All I have to do is study hard and pass," she said.

Vodacom is proud to be able to offer this bursary scheme and help bright students reach their full potential.
