Vodacom Group ranked Africa's Top Employer

Thursday, 18 January 2024

Vodacom Group has been ranked by the Top Employers Institute as the continent’s number one employer. This prestigious certification and first place ranking has also been awarded to Vodacom South Africa and Vodacom Mozambique.

Each year, the Top Employers Institute certifies organisations who are focused on putting their people first through exceptional Human Resource (HR) policies. The Top Employers Institute programme certifies organisations based on the participation and results of its HR Best Practices Survey. This survey covers six HR domains consisting of 20 topics including People Strategy, Work Environment, Talent Acquisition, Learning, Diversity & Inclusion and Wellbeing.

While Vodacom Group has been listed as a Top Employer for seven consecutive years prior (2017-2023), this is the first time the company has attained first position in the overall Top Employer on the continent.

Vodacom Group CEO, Shameel Joosub said, “It is an honour to be recognised as the Top Employer on the continent where our main reason for existence is to connect for a better future. Our employees live our purpose through the ‘Spirit of Vodacom’ which includes several initiatives that ensure our employees remain engaged, boosting morale and cultivating a progressive and effective organisational culture”.

In recent years, Vodacom Group introduced a Spirit Beat survey which measures how well the ‘Spirit of Vodacom’ resonates with employees, while also identifying areas for improvement. The Group has also advanced its Employee Value Proposition (EVP) to enable working conditions where employees can belong, thrive, and make a difference on the continent. Underpinned by four pillars: opportunity; innovation; people; and impact, the EVP creates a purpose-led, technology-driven environment where people want to work.

Vodacom Group’s Chief Officer for Human Resources, Matimba Mbungela, said: “Achieving such a major milestone, competing against such a worthy list of Top Employers in the continent was no mean feat and credit goes to all our stakeholders who have been key in transforming our HR practices across our markets. Teamwork and collaboration have played a significant role in attaining this latest milestone.”

Vodacom Group’s population reach across its markets exceeds 500 million people, with operations in South Africa, Tanzania, the DRC, Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt and partners in Safaricom Kenya and Safaricom Ethiopia. The Top Employer certification was also awarded to Vodacom Lesotho, Vodacom DRC, Vodacom Tanzania, Safaricom Kenya and Safaricom Ethiopia.
