Story:
BEING part of the world’s biggest mobile company has great benefits for our people. The Vodafone International Mobility Programme lets us develop the skills and careers of top-performing individuals by exposing them to exciting challenges in other markets.
We’re particularly proud of our MD of South Africa, Shameel Joosub, who recently left to become CEO of Vodafone Spain.
Shameel joined the Vodacom Group when it launched in 1994 as a senior accountant. He then had headed up procurement for Vodacom and ultimately became the founder of the Vodacom Equipment Company, our famously efficient handset distribution company. At the age of 29, Shameel was appointed MD of the Vodacom Service Provider Company (VSP). This was created out of the four service providers, Vodacom, Teljoy, GSM and Cellphones Direct. While he was at the helm, VSP was turned around from making a loss to becoming a very profitable operation.
In 2005, after his success at VSP, Shameel was appointed MD of Vodacom South Africa, a merger between VSP and the network company which he successfully ran till March 2011.
Shameel, who was not yet 40 at the time he took up the Spanish job, will head a company that has a third of Spain’s 50 million mobile subscribers but that faces enormous competitive pressures. No doubt he will be able to use many of the valuable lessons he has learnt at Vodacom over the past 16 years to benefit Vodafone Spain, its people and customers.
