Story:
The CCBRT hospital uses Vodafone M-Pesa to help some of the poorest and most desperate women in the country to access corrective surgery. Using Vodafone M-Pesa women from the poorest communities receive the funds for transport costs to hospital. Within an hour of referral, funds are sent via Vodafone M-Pesa to cover the family’s travel costs to hospital.
In the first half of 2010, surgeries for fistula were 51% higher than in the first half of 2009, whereas cleft lip/palate surgeries have increased by 75% in the same period. However, thousands of women continue to suffer. With the support of the Vodafone Foundation the hope is the number of surgeries performed at the CCBRT will continue to increase. “Transport costs are often a signifi cant barrier to treatment. Removing this means CCBRT can improve the lives of more and more people,” notes CCBRT Chief Executive Offi cer, Erwin Telemans.
